Working with a $60.4 million budget for the Brainerd School District's building project, officials report the project is $739,153 over budget.
The Brainerd School Board approved the projected $60.4 million budget Monday. The budget was prepared by Kraus Anderson and Widseth Smith Nolting architecture and engineering firm.
The $60.4 million budget includes $44.5 million in revenues to construct Forestview Middle School; $6,809,442 to remodel the high school; $750,000 to remodel Washington Middle School, $140,558 to build a new roof on Mississippi Horizons; $5 million for technology; and $3.2 million for site development.
John Huenink of Kraus Anderson said the estimates for all the projects -- except the middle school -- were preliminary since most of the work for those projects has not been prepared at this time.
Of the $44.5 million in revenues for Forestview, $39,484,153 will be spent in construction costs; $2,865,000 for architecture and engineering fees; and $2,890,000 for owner costs, such as furniture, financing and district administration costs.
Huenink said this figure goes $739,153, or 2 percent, over budget. He said this percent is low and he is comfortable with the numbers.
WSN Project Manager John Luce said the money could be saved by using alternative materials that are less expensive. The engineers estimate this type of savings at $914,000.
Luce said one of the reasons why the expenditures were higher than the revenues is the middle school will be 339,000 square feet in size -- 3,000 square feet more than projected. Luce said the reason for the change is the school needed additional space for loading dock areas and more square footage to meet health standards.
Luce said another factor why the expenditures are higher is WSN was conservative when it estimated what the contractors' bids for projects would be.
Construction of the middle school has been the focus of the building project. Clearing the site should be completed shortly and excavating and earthwork will begin this week.
Work is scheduled to begin Oct. 30 on the foundation and footings.
