News is big business- literally. Disney owns ABC. General Electric owns NBC; Viacom- CBS; AOL Time Warner owns CNN. There was a time when monopolies were illegal. Now, oligopolies control the marketplace; the marketplace of goods and services as well as ideas.
In theory, capitalism works by insuring that stiff competition creates an atmosphere where companies supply goods and services at the lowest price possible since they are locked into a situation in which other companies are endeavoring to do the same. Well and good.
What happens when boards of directors are made up of members which serve on each others boards? Interlocking directorates are formed. Of the boards of directors of 11 major news corporations, they are linked with 272 corporations with a total of 321 links. How does this effect the news? This would be good fodder for any and all town hall meetings.
The parent companies of NBC, CBS, Fox and CNN each have a director who is also on the board of the New York Stock Exchange. So much for the so-called liberal media. It smacks of ultra-conservatism to me.
Eleven media players have interlocks with six oil companies, 18 insurance companies, 18 major banks and 31 investment companies. Nine health care and pharmaceutical companies are also well represented on the eleven major media boards by providing 12 directors.
Are the commercials you're watching selling more than products and services?
The person that stated my previous letter was an attack on unions should go back and read it again. I was not attacking unions. I was pointing out that certain behavior is wrong. Webster's dictionary defines terrorism: the use of force or threats to demoralize, intimidate, and subjugate, such as a political weapon or policy. Terrorize: to coerce, make submit etc by filling with terror as by the use or threat of violence. These are tactics used by some strikers. They are tactics, if not encouraged, at least approved of by unions. If you are on a picket line and do nothing to stop these activities then you are giving your approval and are for them. So, is Mr. Webster wrong or outdated?
I would like to commend the Brainerd Fire Department for another great open house this year. The lessons they teach the kids are invaluable. From the popcorn and cookies to the coloring books and stickers, the kids love it. The New York firefighters are great and I think Brainerd's are pretty terrific too.
Wasting tax money
I object to Region 5 and LSS wasting taxpayer dollars by competing against our local nutrition site at the community centers.
The restaurants are for-profit businesses and I believe that they were not told the full story before they agreed to provide the Diner's Club service.
