Staples-Motley returns to state tourney

Posted: Wednesday, October 14, 2009

SARTELL - The top-seeded Staples-Motley Cardinals defeated the No. 2 Sauk Centre Mainstreeters 6-1 for the Section 6-1A championship Tuesday to advance to their fifth straight state tournament.

S-M, ranked third in 1A, advances to the state tournament Oct. 27 in Minneapolis. The Cardinals placed fourth at state last year.

"All year long, because we've been deep and played a lot of kids on our team, it looked like we weren't doing as well as we could," said Cardinals head coach Kevin Coughlin. "We snuck by with a win here and there, but playing all those different players really paid off.

"Our No. 3 singles player, Andrea Koskiniemi, came up sick so we had to move Mikayla Wing up to No. 3 and bring in Annie Kautto at No. 4. Mikayla stepped up and won a big match and Annie, although she lost, played very well."

The Cardinals swept the doubles while Abby Edin and Skye Coughlin pulled off singles victories.
