Brainerd heads into section with victory

GIRLS' SOCCER

BAXTER - After allowing a late first-half goal, the Brainerd Warriors played inspired soccer in the second half for a 2-1 victory over the Moorhead Spuds Tuesday at Southdale Field.

With the Section 8-2A seedings looming, the victory was an important one for the Warriors.

"The girls did play hard and it was a good game for us in section seedings, which we find out (Wednesday) so right now I don't know if we play Saturday or when," said Warriors head coach Sara Rojas. "We played tough and came together well."

Brainerd owned a 1-0 lead thanks to Stacy Tetreault's goal at 19:21, off an assist from Emily Beltran.

Kellie Barnaby scored the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 34th minute of the second half.

"Taylor McElfresh was running down the field calling for the ball and had a breakaway and I don't know what she was thinking," said Rojas. "She's a defender pretending to be a forward or something and I just thought roll with it.

"She got down toward the goal and I yelled 'shoot' and she did and got fouled on it. It was awesome. I don't know who she thought she was, but if I was going to give an assist on the PK it would be to Taylor."

The Warrior defense allowed just one shot and much to the chagrin of Rojas the one shot snuck into the net.
