The following students at Lowell Elementary School recently selected the student of the month for being a self-directed learner: Kerria Robinson, Courtney Kolas, Sarah Yeh, Karlie Mogensen, Derik Carner, Jacqueline Caughey, Alex Hartwig, Elena Hirst, Jared Nusbaum, Tara Saley, Lilly Anderson, Rebecca Yeh, Zoe Houle, Alex Ford and Travis DeRosier.
The following students at Garfield Elementary School were named students of the month for September: Kimberly Shipman, Cody Robak, Megan Lintner, Kassie Horton, Jeff Johnson, Carrie Steen, Alyssa Kasper, Matthew Krueger, Kelsey Ketterling, Kyle Sirbasku, Morganne Johnson, Jesse Bosch, Tyler Russel, Cecelia Scherman, Kayla Warner, Dillon McKay and Brianna Kirkvold.
Katherine Frid of Brainerd was recently awarded a $2,000 Member Scholarship from Aid Association for Lutheran/Lutheran Brotherhood. Frid attends Gustavus Aldolphus College in Saint Peter.
Andrew Miller, Nisswa, accepted a $1,200 Hoeschler Vocal Music Scholarship from Bemidji State University for the 2002-03 academic year. Miller is a sophomore majoring in vocal music education. Miller is a member of the Bemidji Choir and the Chamber Singers.
Cyrus Swann, Pine River, accepted a $600 Margaret H. Harlow Ceramics and a $777 Roy and Eva T. Lind scholarships from Bemidji State University for the 2002-03 academic year. Swan is a senior majoring in fine arts.
Genevieve Johnson of Little Falls has been selected as student of the month for October by the Youth Activities Committee of Brainerd Elks Lodge No. 615. Johnson is a senior at Little Falls High School and is involved in band, Drama Club, student council, Little Falls Honor Society, and was involved in the Flyer Media Productions. Johnson plans to attend a four-year college to major in communications to pursue a career in broadcast news/journalism.
UPM-Kymmene/Blandin Paper Co. will accept applications for the Blandin Paper Co. scholarship program for the 2003-04 academic year. Application deadline is Nov. 22. Six scholarships of $5,000 each will be awarded. To be eligible, a student must have completed at least one year of college or university program with a major in chemistry, forestry, computer science, paper science/engineering or mechanical/electrical/chemical engineering; have a minimum 3.0 GPA; and have graduated from Aitkin, Brainerd, Cass Lake, Crosby-Ironton, McGregor, Remer, Walker and other schools in northern Minnesota. A student must submit an application, a resume, a brief essay, two reference letters and a copy of their most recent college transcript.
