ORONO, Maine (AP) -- St. Cloud State goaltender Dean Weasler turned aside 30 shots and five different Huskies scored goals Friday as St. Cloud State defeated Clarkson 5-1 in the opening round of the Icebreaker Tournament.
St. Cloud (1-0-0) scored three times in the first period. After goals by Matt Hendricks and Dave Iannazzo, Mark Hartigan tipped a shot between Clarkson goalie Mike Walshs pads as time expired in the opening period.
Chris Line cut into a 4-0 lead for the Golden Knights at 18:26 of the second period. The goal gave Clarkson life and they stormed the Husky net over the final minute of the period on the power play.
Weasler proved equal to the task, turning aside point-blank scoring chances by Jay Latulippe and Matt Poapst.
St. Cloud's Mike Doyle scored a fluke goal early in the third to restore the four-goal margin. Fighting off a Clarkson defenseman on a partial breakaway, Doyle lost control of the puck, which somehow found its way between Golden Knights goalie Mike Walshs pads.
Clarkson is 0-1-0.
St. Cloud State faces Maine (1-0-0) in the tournament championship Saturday night.
