Skarperud leads UND

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) -- Tim Skarperud scored two goals to lead North Dakota to a 6-2 win over Colorado College on Saturday in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association opener for both teams.

The Fighting Sioux (1-1) scored goals on their first two shots. Skarperud netted a deflection and Kevin Spiewak scored from the side of the net to put North Dakota up 2-0 with just three minutes gone in the game.

David Lundbohm's backhander on a power play made it 3-0 with less than seven minutes gone. Rory McMahon also scored for the Sioux in the first period.

Colorado College, playing its season opener, got first-period goals from Mark Kullen and Peter Sejna to pull within 4-2.

Skarperud scored the only goal of the second period. Ryan Bayda, who had two assists, had the lone score in the third period.

Andy Kollar stopped 26 shots for North Dakota. Jeff Sanger had 27 saves for the Tigers.
