Film series to begin Saturday
First Congregational United Church of Christ opens its film series at 7 p.m. Saturday with the highly acclaimed documentary "Troubled Waters." Doors open at 6:15 p.m. Admission is free.
Hosted by actress Lynn Redgrave, the film explores the critical issues of water shortage through the lens of faith and from the perspective of people in Bolivia, Malawi, the Middle East and the United States, who struggle daily to find access to clean, safe water.
In this documentary, religious and community leaders, water experts and everyday people address the urgent need for action in the midst of a global crisis: the diminishing availability of fresh water due to war, corporate greed, pollution, overpopulation and drought. Despite the shortages, some see water as a commodity to be bought and sold for profit. However, faith teaches us that water is a right given to all.
The documentary made its debut on ABC TV stations in the fall of 2006.

SONshine Ministries, families in Mexico need help
A retired Brainerd city bus has been working with Hurricane Dean victims in Veracruz, Mexico. The bus, and a 5x8 foot enclosed trailer donated by a Brainerd couple this summer, has hauled food, clothing and other materials to 70 families who were completely wiped out of all earthly possessions by Hurricane Dean in August.
And while the donated Brainerd city bus has been a tremendous help, more help is needed.
SONshine Ministries co-founders, Keith and Linda Axvig and Dan and Pat Schulist, are hoping someone will be able to donate a car, pickup or some type of van that can handle rough moutain terrain to Pastor Eduardo Rodriquez of the Mision Divina church in Matamoros, Mexico.
If anyone is interested in helping, call 829-9791 or (218) 831-3064.
SONshine Ministries International is headquartered at 18127 Hartley Dr., Brainerd.
