BACKUS -- Lawrence (Larry) Simpson, age 87, of Backus, passed away Friday, Oct. 10 at Whispering Pines Good Samaritan Center in Pine River. Born May 9, 1916, in Morris, Wis., to Stuart and Hannah (Eikaas) Simpson. Larry married Winnifred Stroud on Aug. 1, 1942, in San Antonio, Texas. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was inducted on Jan. 8, 1942, and discharged on Dec. 4, 1945. From June of 1944 to February of 1945 he served with the 24th Air Depot Group in the Mariannas Islands. He received the Bronze Star, Atlantic Pacific Theatre Ribbon, American Theatre Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, Unit Citation and the World War II Victory Ribbon. Larry was a member of the Backus American Legion and Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Backus.
He is survived by one daughter, Darla Krause (Dan) of Backus; three sons, Dennis Simpson (Carol) of Jordan, Dale Simpson (Cheryl) of Eden Prairie, and David Simpson of Minneapolis; a sister, Carol Otto, of Gresham, Wis.; a nephew, Roy Otto Jr.; a great-nephew, Corbin Otto; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Winnifred.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Backus with Pastor Brett Balfour officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Backus. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements by Kline Funeral Home Pine River.
