Release of tape recordings of closed meetings concerning the loan dispute between the city of Brainerd and American National Bank does not seem likely soon, despite the efforts of council president James Wallin and Mayor Bob Olson.

A newspaper ad place by the Parents for Positive Education, charging that the "occult" was being taught at Brainerd High School, aroused the ire of an English teacher. Guy Doud appeared at the school board and called the charge "distorted" and "far-fetched."
40 years ago (1969)

60 years ago (1949)
Extensive damage to telephone and power lines was reported in Brainerd and vicinity when winds of near hurricane force and squalls of rain lashed the area in a wild midday storm. Trees were broken and uprooted and doors and windows were smashed.
80 years ago (1929)
Brainerd was virtually assured of a state armory this week by Col. E.A. Walsh, adjutant general of the National Guard of Minnesota. Brainerd was to get the armory and tank corps since Little Falls had secured the national training camp.
100 years ago (1909)
The residence of John Gaffney was damaged by fire Friday night and nearly all the family's clothing was destroyed. It was believed started by a lamp in an upstairs bedroom. After the alarm the fireboys responded quickly and soon had it controlled.
