The Brainerd School Board Legislative Committee met Thursday with a local legislator and his challenger to discuss legislative issues, including unfunded mandates.
Board members met with Rep. John Ward, DFL-Brainerd, and his Republican challenger, David Allan Pundt.
Board members emphasized the need for equity in school funding and about unfunded state and federal mandates, which currently divert more than $3 million a year from the district's general budget.
Specifically, board members talked about the new state Type III driver requirement enacted during the most recent legislative session that requires all school district drivers be drug-tested, licensed and trained to drive students in district vans. It is costing the district an estimated and unbudgeted $25,000 to implement this year.
