LOCAL NEWS Justice project seeks volunteers
Lakes Area Restorative Justice Project, an area nonprofit that works with youth in the Crow Wing County area, is looking for volunteer facilitators.
Volunteers do not need to have any prior experience. They may volunteer as their schedule permits. Volunteers are provided training and reimbursement, including mileage, for their expenses. The next training is 3-9:30 p.m. Oct. 24, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 25 and noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 26 at Central Lakes College.
LARJP is a community directed, operated and supported project operating in the Crow Wing County area with local law enforcement and schools. LARJP accepts referrals from law enforcement and schools on juveniles who have broken the law, usually minor offenses, and those who have violated school rules.
Volunteers, who receive mentoring help and work in pairs, are required to be 18 or older, complete 21 hours of classroom training, have personal transportation, attend four in-service training sessions per year and have a desire to help their community. Responsibilities include about five to 15 hours per month when living in the area and accepting a minimum of four cases per year.

Great Pumpkin Festival planned for Oct. 18
The second annual Great Pumpkin Festival will be 1 to 5 p.m. Oct. 18 at Gregory Park in Brainerd.
All activities are free and include three-legged races, sack races, wheelbarrow races, pumpkin rolling, bobbing for apples, a Hula Hoop contest, a water relay and a pie-eating contest.
Children will be divided into three groups: ages 6 and under, 7 to 11, and 12 and older. Included in the events is a chance for parents or guardians to participate in the activities with their children.
Also scheduled is youth and adult pie-eating contests. A pie-throwing contest featuring pastors from area churches is also planned.
There will be drawings for free pumpkins.
Crossing Arts Alliance/Flip Side will have a haunted house, mask making and spooky food.
Children must be accompanied by a family member age 18 or older.
Food will include Wendy's chili, Giovanni's pizza, hot dogs, polish sausage, cookies, sloppy Joe's, caramel apples, hot cider, hot chocolate, coffee and pop.
The event is sponsored by the Brainerd Parks and Recreation Department. Other sponsors include the Brainerd Kiwanis Club, Crossing Arts Alliance/Flip Side, Winner's Trophy & Engraving, Baxter Wal-Mart, Wendy's Old-Fashioned Hamburgers, Giovanni's Pizza and the Central Lakes College men's basketball team.

Chamber to host LF council and school board forums
LITTLE FALLS - The Little Falls Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring candidate forums for Little Falls City Council and Little Falls Community School Board races.
These forums are open to the general public and will be taped for re-broadcast on cable access Channel 6 for Little Falls and cable access Channel 10 in Pierz.
The Little Falls City Council candidate forum will be from 5-6:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at Little Falls City Hall - Council Chambers, 100 Seventh Ave. Little Falls City Council candidates include: incumbents Mike Doucette, Kate (Zak) Davis and candidates Frank Gosiak, Rich Hogan, Robert Messinger, Urban Otremba and Amanda Seelen.
The Little Falls School Board candidate forum, will be 6:45-8:15 p.m. Oct. 14 at Little Falls City Hall - Council Chambers, 100 Seventh Ave. Candidates for Little Falls School Board include: incumbents Bob Stoltman, Greg Zylka and candidates Leslie Russell Martin and Jay Spillum.

Post office to operate on holiday schedule Monday
The Brainerd Post Office will operate on a holiday schedule Monday in observance of Columbus Day.
Postmaster David Fuchs said regular residential and business deliveries will not be made Monday and usual post office lobby services will not be available with the exception of post office lock box service.
Mail pickup from collection boxes also will be on a holiday schedule, as posted on individual boxes.
