Verndale comes together as a team for volleyball win

MENAHGA -- The Verndale Pirates volleyball team decided to disrupt Menahga's parents night Tuesday by defeating Park Region Conference foe 7-15, 15-5, 15-12, 15-7.

"We really played as a team tonight," said Verndale coach Kelly Youngbauer. "It was really fun to watch."

The team play was real evident on the defensive side of the net, as Verndale chalked up almost 100 digs with five different players racking up at least 13.

Jessica Desrocher led the dig category for the Pirates, as she tallied 25 of them.

"She was all over the floor tonight," said Youngbauer. "She came out of this game a wounded warrior."

HINCKLEY -- The Pierz Pioneers defeated the Hinckley-Finlayson Jaguars 15-5, 15-9, 6-15, 15-3 Tuesday in non-conference volleyball.

"I could tell that we were emotionally and physically drained after last nights win at Cathedral," said Pierz coach Wally Brown, "but we played well enough to win."

Kari Block played a solid game for the Pioneers, going 17-18 serving, with five aces, 13 kills, 15 set assists, and 12 digs.

ISLE -- The Pillager Huskies lost a tightly fought match the Isle Indians in non-conference volleyball Tuesday 15-13, 16-14, 15-7.

Coach Penny Dobson of Pillager noted that the passing was not very good tonight and might have contributed to their downfall.

Serving was not the problem as the Huskies only missed six serves and recorded 10 aces.

Jackie Stoll led the way with 12-of-13 serving with six aces and three kills.

In an intense final game, W-H-A pulled off a 16-14 win to win the match. W-H-A won the first game 15-9, Pequot won the next two 15-2, 15-7, and W-H-A won the fourth 15-10.

Julie Redebaugh finished with 21 kills, 5 ace tips, 27 digs and was 17-of-20 serving with three aces for the Patriots.
