Outdoor News

LAKE MILLE LACS

East - The walleye bite has been tough. Crankbaits are producing "one or two" walleyes a night in shallow water and the day bite has been non-existent. Muskie and pike anglers also struggled this week. Opening weekend waterfowl reports were encouraging with good numbers of ducks and geese in the area. Grouse numbers also appear high and the leaves have started to drop, which will improve shooting opportunities.

West - The handful of anglers that has been out between rain showers is catching walleyes on the flats in 24 to 30 feet. Now that the water has cooled, look for the shallow crankbait action to improve during low-light periods. Muskie and pike anglers have been minimal and look for the perch to start showing up in the bays. There doesn't seem to be many ducks on this end of the lake.

BRAINERD/NISSWA AREA

Walleye action has really improved with rainbows, redtails, and chubs working best in 17 to 32 feet at Gull Lake, North Long Lake, and Pelican Lake. Northern pike are being found in 18 to 25 feet of water at Gull and North Long and crappies are hitting rosy red minnows on a jig in eight to 15 feet of water at Gull and Round.

CROSBY

A jig and minnow is turning northern pike and walleyes in 21 to 23 feet at Rabbit Lake, Serpent Lake, and Pelican Lake. Huntington Pit and Portsmouth Pit started giving up a few trout again. Most of them are being taken on crankbaits during the morning hours in the top 20 feet of the water column. Look for crappies in 12 to 16 feet at Little Rabbit Lake and the Mississippi River has produced a few walleyes and smallmouth bass. Grouse hunters are finding success, but foliage remains thick. Duck hunters are doing OK with mallards, wood ducks, and ringbills in most bags.

EMILY AREA

Mallards and wood ducks were in most bags on opening weekend, deer seem to be more active this week, and there is some good grouse reports coming in.

HACKENSACK AREA

Duck hunters shot a few birds on the bigger lakes with rice, but it was not the best opener. Grouse hunters are seeing or hearing birds and shooting opportunities should improve once the leaves drop.
