LITTLE FALLS -- Betty I. (Nichols) Smith, 77, Little Falls, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at Lutheran Care Center in Little Falls.
She was born March 21, 1925, in Clough Township to John and Arabella (Meyer) Nichols. She attended school in District No. 34 and graduated from Burtrum High School. She moved to Minneapolis after high school and worked at Montgomery Ward. She married James Newcomb on July 18, 1944. They later divorced. She worked at Munsingwear in Little Falls as a seamstress for 18 years. She married Jerry Smith on Oct. 1, 1960. They owned and operated Smith's Laundry Service for 14 years. She worked as a manager of St. Gabriel's Hospital laundry from 1975 until her retirement in 1995. She was a member of Grace Covenant Church in Little Falls.
Survivors include a son, Les Newcomb, Little Falls; a daughter, Annette Sutton, Cashton, Wis.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five sisters, Leora Schultz, Minneapolis, Caroline Hanson, Brainerd, Inez Schultz, Little Falls, Yvonne Root, Garrison, and Norma Gilson, Fort Ripley; and a brother, Carney Nichols, Mankato.
Her husband; a sister, Audrey DeRosier; and a brother, Jerry Nichols, died earlier.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Grace Covenant Church in Little Falls with the Rev. Steven Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Fort Ripley Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls and an hour before services Thursday at the church.
