ST. PAUL (AP) -- The Minnesota Golden Gophers outshot Notre Dame 31-to-18 on their way to a 7-3 season opening victory at the Xcel Energy Center over the Fighting Irish.
Playing at the new home of the NHL expansion Minnesota Wild on Saturday, the Gophers capitalized on three of six power play opportunities. Matt Koalska opened the scoring for the Gophers with an unassisted goal with only 2:26 elapsed in the first period.
Koalska also assisted a Jeff Taffe goal in the second period.
Erik Westrum added a power play goal for the Gophers in the second period and another in the third.
The Fighting Irish didn't put the puck in the net until 11:13 had elapsed in the second frame, already trailing 3-0.
Notre Dame didn't score again until late in the third period.
