WALKER - Cass County Board waived the county's hiring freeze Tuesday to allow two vacancies to be filled.
Health, Human and Veterans Services will be allowed to fill a child support collections vacancy. Linda Nye, child support collections supervisor, told the board federal funds pay most of that salary. Incentives the division can earn by meeting collections goals likely will cover most of the balance, she said.
That position has been funded in the county 2008 and 2009 budgets, HHVS Director Dorothy Opheim said.
Jim Schneider, probation officer, obtained board approval to replace Kelly Felton, who recently resigned from her probation officer position. That position is partially funded by state reimbursements, he said.
Without filling that vacancy, Schneider said the remaining probation officers could not adequately serve the number of people in their caseloads.
Opheim reported to the board her department shifted from contract services to having a staff social worker respond to family services this year. She said response time was cut to 24 hours or less as a result of the change. She said she believes this has made a difference for diminishing out-of-home child placement costs.
The board voted to increase the cost for flu vaccine at county-sponsored clinics from $20 to $25 this year and to raise the cost for county nurses to provide foot care from $15 to $20.
