The Dispatch had a picture of a crew installing a sanitary sewer on Oak Street. The picture was in the Dispatch Sept. 23 on page 6A.
I want to comment on the dangerous situation these workers could be in if the dirt walls or banks would cave in, especially for the two men working at the bottom of the excavation. I don't see any sheeting on the side of the excavation braced from bank to bank to prevent a cave in. That could bury the two men. I also think the backhoe is too close to the edge of the excavation. I see no matts that are used on heavy equipment to keep the machine from sliding in to the hole.
From the top of the excavation to the bottom it looks to me like it is 10' or 12', so if there was a cave in four workers could be buried with soil.
I write this Open Forum letter because I worked in construction for twelve or thirteen years so I am sure this picture indicates a very dangerous situation for these workers.
