BEMIDJI -- Wanda Theone Torfin, 82, Bemidji, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at home.
She was born March 24, 1920, in Beresford, S.D., to George and Nora (Petersen) Axlund. She attended school in Beresford. She married Clinton Torfin on Dec. 22, 1940, in Beresford. Before moving to Bemidji in 1968, they lived in Devils Lake, N.D., Ely, Brainerd and Burnsville. For the past 20 years they wintered in Mesa, Ariz. She was a Cub Scout leader in Ely, and volunteered at Brainerd State Hospital, Southdale Hospital in Minneapolis and for 25 years at the hospital and nursing home in Bemidji. She also was a Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include a son, James Torfin, Brainerd; two daughters, Judy Rossi, St. Paul, and Barbara Treat, Bemidji; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Clinton, two sons, Gary and Richard, two brothers, Raland and Kendall Axlund, and two sisters, Waunita Ollerman and Marlys Taylor, died earlier.
Services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Bethel Lutheran Church in Bemidji with the Rev. Steve Olson and the Rev. Gary Danielson officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Bemidji. Memorials are preferred to North Country Home Care/Hospice in Bemidji.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home in Bemidji and an hour before services Friday at the church.
