Proposed redevelopment at the Gander Mountain site on Edgewood Drive in Baxter could include two new businesses and two new restaurants.
The Baxter City Council on Tuesday approved a sketch for a proposed planned unit development that will include a PETCO and Michaels - a specialty retail store for general crafts, home decor, framing materials, arts and hobbies - in the former Ashley Furniture site in the Gander Mountain building.
The restaurants, an Olive Garden and an IHOP, are proposed to be built at the east end of the parking lot, just off Edgewood Drive.
Mayor Darrel Olson, in an interview Wednesday, said the proposal is only preliminary.
"Now they will start to fine tune it," Olson said.
The council's agenda information said the proposed infill development will bring about a clustering of businesses that should complement each other and create synergy in the area.
There were no financial implications for the city with the sketch review, which was for comment only and the city reserves full authority to approve or deny the planned unit development application.
