As potluck would have it, a 'very hearty' one-dish meal
I love potlucks. There's always a wide variety of foods from which to choose and I usually find something new and interesting.
Cake with kick
Chai is a rich, spiced drink from India that lends deep flavors and aromas to this easy apple cake from Krystina Castella and Terry Lee Stone's cookbook, "Booze Cakes." Most grocers carry chai concentrates that can be diluted with milk and heated for a comforting beverage. If you can't find the chai cream liqueur called for in this recipe, substitute an equal amount of the concentrate.

Open Forum: A successful rookie season
A hearty round of congratulations is in order after a successful rookie season for the Brainerd Chapter of "Let's Go Fishing With Seniors" organization. These folks (all local volunteers) took over 800 nursing home residents, seniors, grandkids, veterans and disabled people fishing and boating on our local lakes.
OTHER OPINION: DEMOCRACY
Just as Iraq's political impasse looked to be unending, a breakthrough came. On the day it surpassed the record - 207 days - for the time between a parliamentary election and the formation of a government, the country learned that its next administration will almost certainly be led by the prime minister now in office, Nouri al-Maliki. Mr. Maliki finally won the endorsement of the radical Shiite Sadrist movement, with which he went to war just two years ago. That unlocked a frenzy of maneuvering that most likely will lead, in a few weeks or months, to a government encompassing all of the country's major factions, including Sunnis and Kurds.
Open Forum:
What sets democracies apart from other forms of government is the right of all citizens to have their voices and opinions heard. We do this by voting. On Nov. 2, we have important elections that affect our towns, counties, state and federal government. Please do your part.
OTHER OPINION: FURLOUGHS
There are three possibilities for why sensible revisions to the rules governing furloughs for federal inmates have not been implemented some seven years after they were drafted: Prison administrators are incompetent; union rules are impossibly cumbersome; or both. Under any scenario, the delay is absurd.
On the trail, non-stop Biden
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Joe Biden has a lot to say for himself. I spent a rainy 12-hour day with the vice president on Monday and from beginning to end, I don't think there was any period when he was not talking to people. The man is determined to carry the burden of his work. He wants to show you what he knows.

We have higher priorities than airport construction money. Twice runway 05 and 23 have been rebuilt the last 15 years. Another runway 16/34 added then extended. Now a new terminal building. Yet new jet bridge super structure and additional boarding capacity were demolished in the 90s. My business travel is down 50 percent while televideo conferencing requirements are up 500 percent.
