CAMP RIPLEY - Several Minnesota National Guard soldiers were to be inducted Sunday into Camp Ripley's Court of Honor in a ceremony at Camp Ripley's Recreation Center.
This event, which began in 1933, recognized one current and three retired National Guard soldiers based on heroism and distinguished professional achievement and service during their service to their country and communities. They share the honor with 390 other Minnesota National Guard soldiers already recognized.
Honored Sunday were Command Sgt. Maj. Kelly M. Booge, Command Sgt. Maj. Larry W. Helsene, Master Sgt. Michael J. Bellos and Staff Sgt. Chad A. Malmberg. The four honorees have a total of 110 years of combined service.
The ceremony also paid special recognition to the 175th Field Artillery, which was the unit that fired the first American round during World War II. Four former members were in attendance during the ceremony. These members received a proclamation signed by Minnesota Gov. Timothy Pawlenty, a special citation from Minnesota Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Larry W. Shellito and a Division coin from the 34th Infantry Division Commander Maj. Gen. Richard Nash.
