BAXTER -- Shawn McKay, who works at Clearw're wireless broadband in the Grizzly's Center in Baxter, planned to drive to the garbage bin in the center's parking lot Wednesday morning, but he never made it.
Instead the 2005 Chevrolet TrailBlazer company vehicle he was driving became submerged in water in the parking lot with him in it. McKay, 36, Baxter, crawled out of the driver's side window and escaped with no injuries. He was just a little wet.
McKay had no comment on the incident that was reported to the Baxter Police Department at 8:51 a.m.
Baxter police patrolman Vic Sofie said McKay was driving through the parking lot to the garbage bins when he made too wide of a turn. Sofie said the vehicle was too close to the edge of the parking lot and sunk into the water that was four to five feet deep.
Justin Paul and Steve Stohr of West Brainerd Amoco towed the TrailBlazer out of the water. They said the vehicle was a total loss.
Lindsey Kiffmeyer, who was working at the Sprint Store next to Clearw're wireless broadband, witnessed the accident.
"I could have done the same thing," she said. "It just looked like a big, shallow puddle.
"I feel real bad for him."
