TEMPE, Ariz. - Robert (Bob) James Halloran passed away Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at Hospice of the Valley Friendship Village in Tempe, Ariz., after a short illness. He was 90 years of age.
Bob was born in Glencoe, Minn., on Jan. 16, 1918, to James and Margaret (Bergman) Halloran and was raised on the fmaily farm in Browerville, Minn., graduating from high school in 1937. Activity in 4-H club work led to his enrollment and scholarship at the University of Minnesota Agricultural College and as an extension agent.
Bob met his future wife of 66-plus years, Eleanor B. Clausen, while serving as an extension agent in Redwood Falls, Minn. They were married in Minneapolis on Jan. 11, 1942. In August of 1942, Bob joined the Merchant Marines and served as a ship's officer and purser until his honorable discharge in 1946. He sailed the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans delivering war supplies to every front and he survived a torpedoing in the infamous "Murmansk Run." Following military duty, he joined his wife in Brainerd, Minn., and began a 50-year career in the auto industry as both a new and used car dealer. The most recent 40 years were spent in Longmont, Colo. During this career, he was honored to be selected to serve as Colorado Association President and as National Vice-President of the NIADA.
His zest for life included pursuing varying interests such as raising registered black angus cattle, collectiong special interest cars, golf and Dixieland jazz. He and his wife relocated part-time to Sun Lakes, Ariz., in 1985 and decided to permanently retire to Arizona in 1994.
Bob is survived by his wife, Eleanor; three children, Sandra Lee Ostrander, of Longmont, Colo., Robert Michael Halloran, of Garden City, Kan., and Randal James Halloran, of Ladysmith, Wis.; one brother, James Halloran, of Brainerd, Minn., and Sun Lakes, Ariz.; two sisters, Betty Alderman and Jean Berg, both of Brainerd, Minn.; two grandchildren, Heather Hawkins and Brad Halloran; and a great-granddaughter, Grace Hawkins. Eleanor Halloran currently resides in Chandler, Ariz., at Graceville Estate 2.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Robert (Bob) Halloran will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008, at Risen Savior Lutheran Church, Chandler, Ariz.
