WALKER -- Two new off-sale liquor stores hope to open business along Highway 371 in central Cass County this year.
Both have current locations off that main highway corridor. They are going through permitting processes now for their new operations.
Purchasers of the former Pine River Municipal Liquor Store along Barclay Avenue inside the city plan to demolish a building along Highway 371 to relocate on the main highway through that city.
Preliminary work toward tax-increment financing has been laid, with final Pine River City Council approval expected later this month.
The county board and administrative officials reviewed the proposal and waived comment this week and last week, clearing the way for final city approval.
The county board has taken the position TIF projects inside city limits should be determined by the city council involved.
Tuesday, the county board held a public hearing, received no public comments and tabled final action until a conditional use permit is successfully processed for Foothills Saloon in Backus to move their off-sale liquor sales from their restaurant close to the city limits to the former Water World building on Highway 371 in Powers Township outside that city.
Mary Joan Lange, Foothills owner, told the board she hopes to generate more sales on Highway 371 than along Highway 87 between Highway 371 and the city.
