Richard N. Nagel

STAPLES - Richard Nicholas Nagel passed away on Oct. 1, 2009, in Staples, at the age of 85 years, nine months, five days.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5, at Sacred Heart Church in Staples with Father Scott Wittkop officiating with visitation from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at the church. Interment will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples.

Richard was born on Dec. 27, 1923, in Pierz to Michael and Helena (Block) Nagel. He joined the Army during WWII and was later stationed in Korea where he was called upon, among other duties, to cut hair for the servicemen. He was joined in marriage to Janet Herold on May 30, 1949. The couple moved to Staples where he and Janet raised their family and where Richard was a barber for more than 50 years. He thoroughly enjoyed clipping hair and visiting with his customers. He was a member of the VFW, Knights of Columbus and a faithful member of Sacred Heart Church. He loved fishing, hunting, gardening, woodworking and spending time with his family.

Richard is survived by his children, Katherine Fuller, of Motley, Minn., Patricia (Roy) Digiovanni, of Motley, Minn., Jeffrey (Julie) Nagel, of Willmar, Minn., David (Kathryn) Nagel, of Akeley, Minn., Terri (Howard) Kangas, of Perham, Minn., and Julie (LeRoy) Peterson, of Staples, Minn.; by his sisters, Marie Bernice Phelps, of Kansas City, Kan., and Helen LeBlanc Hamrick, of Little Falls, Minn.; 26 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Janet; his sisters, Loretta Gross, Ernestine (Toots) Meyer; his brothers, Walter, Bernard, Raymond, Michael; and his son-in-law, Jeffrey Fuller.
