Opponents of the proposed MacMillan Bloedel wood processing plant, expressing environmental fears, crowded the county board meeting Tuesday. The fear was whether the 1,000 annual tons of wood ash would find its way to the county landfill.

Homestanding Little Falls, a decided underdog, ended Brainerd's dream of a once-beaten season with a 14-8 triumph over the Warriors. The big play was a 54-yard breakaway touchdown run in the fourth quarter by Larry Novakoske.

The giant mechanized figure of Paul Bunyan, which was featured at the Railroad Fair in Chicago this summer, has been purchased by Sherm Levis and is being shipped here now. He will erect the 35-foot figure on the corner near Club LaGuyal.

The Brainerd Lions will "go to the woods" at their Oct. 23 meeting. The club accepted the invitation of the district forest ranger to meet at the forester's cabin at the top of Ahrens Hill, below the fire tower.
100 years ago (1909)
A 20-year-old young man, employed by the Northern Pacific shops, was tragically injured while duck hunting with friends Sunday morning at Buffalo Lake, south of Brainerd. While pulling a gun from the boat it discharged into his right hand.
