The Rev. Canon Edward Burrow sat at the carillon bell organ which he played from 1956 to 1971. The bells installed in the courthouse as a war memorial, have fallen into disrepair. Rev. Barrow, former rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, is urging their restoration.
30 years ago (1970)
Mrs. Lynn Knieff of Deerwood and Les Sellnow of Brainerd were first- place winners on a 100-mile endurance trail ride at Kettlemoraine near Plymouth, Wis. Sellnow was riding his half-Arabian mare. Mrs. Knieff was riding a purebred Arabian horse.

Bill Van Essen returned from Minneapolis where he attended a meeting of the Minnesota Restaurant Association of which he is a director.
60 years ago (1940)
In Brainerd hundreds of sportsmen have oiled up their shotguns, patched up their duckboats and arranged their business so that several days can be devoted to a search for the wily birds. Ducks are assuredly the big news of the day and will remain so for some days to come.
80 years ago (1920)
Some women achieve records by maintaining continuous conversations, others occasionally by saying nothing. But one lady in Brainerd kept her mouth open a whole hour and said not a word. She was in a dentist's chair getting her teeth fixed.
100 years ago (1900)
John, we understand that you took "this fellow's" advice and called upon your neighbors last Sunday. That's right, don't be backward in a good cause.
