League of Women voters to look at the role of media in a democracy

Beth Biley, a free-lance reporter and former editor of the Grand Rapids newspaper, and Heidi Holtan, program director at KAXE Northern Community Radio, will be the featured speakers for the League of Women Voters monthly meeting on Oct. 8.

Coffee will be at 5:30 p.m. in the large meeting room of the Brainerd Library and the program will begin promptly at 6 p.m. The speakers will discuss the role of the media in a democracy and of the changes in the media and new news sources. The League of Women Voters of the Brainerd Lakes Area is the sponsor of this event. The meeting is open to the public.

September precipitation down, and year-to-date amount decreases

It was a dry September in Brainerd and the year-to-date precipitation figure at the DNR forestry office was slightly below average.

The Brainerd Area Forestry Office reported .82 of an inch of rain in September compared to a 10-year-average of 3.47 inches.

The year-to-date precipitation totals are 21.38 inches for September compared to an average of 24.81 inches.

September's high temperature was 84 degrees on Sept. 19. The low temperature of 31 degrees was recorded Wednesday.
