CLC's Starr defensive player of week in Southern Division

Lawson Starr of Central Lakes College has been named the defensive player of the week in the Southern Division of the Minnesota College Athletic Conference.

Starr, a freshman defensive back from Maple Grove, had nine tackles (7 solo) and blocked a field goal, returning it 75 yards for a touchdown, in a 26-19 victory over Rochester.

The Raiders are ranked 11th in the NJCAA poll released Tuesday.

Conference honors Sam Smith, three Flyers

Brainerd diver Samantha Smith was named the Central Lakes Conference performer of the week ending Sept. 27.

Smith scored 237 points against St. Cloud Apollo, her highest score of the year.

In girls' soccer, Brittan Conley, freshman forward from Little Falls, scored two goals and had an assist in three games.

In girls' tennis, Bailey LaCoursiere, sophomore from Little Falls, won two matches in her varsity debut.

In boys' cross country, Little Falls junior Eli Ploof placed 14th out of 100 runners at the Fergus Falls Invite.

JV tennis wins nine

The Brainerd Warrior junior varsity girls' tennis team won nine matches against Rocori on Thursday.

Singles winners were Kayla Kraemer, Katie Beth Strand and Jackie Thurlow.

Doubles winners were the teams of Zoe Wolhart-Libby Chastain, Shannon Chalupsky-Julie Ashburn, Hannah Stoll-Corrina Schmidt, Jackie Thurlow-Katie Beth Strand, Ahrenna Chandler-Kristen Blanch and Briana Rademacher-Alex Williamson.

JV boys tie 1-1

Brainerd and Willmar tied 1-1 in junior varsity boys' soccer Tuesday.

Matt Benson was goalkeeper the first half for Brainerd and stopped seven of eight shots on net. Thor Linnerooth was keeper the second half and made five saves.

Wesley DeLong scored in the 45th minute on an overhead bicycle kick, assisted by Zach Meyer.

Holes-in-one

Jane Abicht, Mound, aced the 90-yard, 11th hole at Eagles Landing Golf Club Sept. 27 using a 9-iron.

Bob Spaeth, Waubun, aced the 158-yard, 13th hole at Golden Eagle Golf Club Sept. 27 using a 7-iron.
