The Lakes Area Senior Activity Center in Brainerd has hired a new executive director.
DeAnn Barry, marketing director at the Brainerd Dispatch, has been hired as senior center executive director, said Steve Esser, senior center board president. Barry starts her new position Oct. 11.
"She comes highly recommended as a real solid individual and leader," said Esser, of Barry.
Barry has worked at the Dispatch for more than six years. She and her husband Jack have three children enrolled in the Brainerd School District. As marketing director at the Dispatch, Barry has organized most events the Dispatch has sponsored or been involved with, including the Ageless Expo, Prayer Breakfast, Century of Cars Show and others. She often has represented the Dispatch at various community events. She also works with teachers and students in area schools with the Newspapers In Education program.
Barry has served on various boards in the Brainerd lakes area, including Brainerd Community Action, Crow Wing County Historical Society and CARE. She also serves on the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church board of education.
"I'm looking forward to working at the senior center, working with the board and the members at the senior center," said Barry.
Barry fills a position left vacant by Wayne Holtmeier, who recently resigned as executive director.
"Wayne was just an exceptional individual but it's a lot of work and also I think Wayne wanted to go back and retire," said Esser, on Holtmeier's departure. "While he was here he made a lot of inroads and DeAnn has a good start to get working. Wayne did a lot for us and I know DeAnn will be great. She will hit the ground running."
Barry was selected out of 27 candidates for the position. A search committee recommended Barry for the position and board members voted to hire Barry at their Sept. 23 board meeting.
