A child riding a Reichert's bus was injured Wednesday when a car rear-ended the bus on Crow Wing County 45 south of Brainerd.
The accident happened about 7:30 a.m., the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department reported, as the bus was picking up children for school.
Sheriff Eric Klang said the bus had stopped with its lights on to pick up two children when a car driven by 16-year-old Johnathan Valesano collided into the rear of the bus.
Klang said Valesano came over a hill and didn't realize the bus had stopped. He said Valesano had stepped on his brakes and tried to go around the bus.
"It could have been a lot more tragic. If he didn't hit the back of the bus he could have went around and hit one of the two kids crossing street," Klang said. "We're really fortunate on this that no one got (seriously) hurt."
Klang said Valesano suffered a bloody nose in the collision. The child, transported by North Ambulance, was treated at St. Joseph's Medical Center and released.
Klang reminded county residents to be aware when driving in the morning and in mid-afternoon to be prepared to stop when driving behind or meeting a bus on the roadway.
