COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Air Force junior Justin Tyner of Brainerd was named the Mountain West Conference men's runner of the week ending Sept. 26.
It's the first such honor for Tyner, who finished fifth out of 167 of the nation's top runners at the Roy Griak Invitational NCAA Division I "Gold" Race in Minneapolis on Saturday.
Completing his first 8-kilometer race of the season in 24:57.8, Tyner nearly matched his career best of 24:50.0 set last year. He moved from 104th (at 1,000 meters) to 45th (3,000 meters) to 14th (5,000 meters) to fifth. His time was also fifth among the 751 runners that competed in all three collegiate races (NCAA Division I Gold, NCAA Division II Maroon and NCAA Division III Maroon).
Tyner paced the Falcons to an eighth-place finish, marking the first time the junior had been the team's top finisher. Competing just hours from his hometown, Tyner was one of three Falcons to finish in the top 40.
Conference honors Sather, Etterman
Brainerd's Matt Sather and Katy Etterman were named Central Lakes Conference Performers of the Week ending Saturday.
In boy's soccer, Sather, a goalie, had three straight shutouts during which he stopped 29 shots.
In diving, Etterman has placed first six times in the first seven meets.
C-I Boosters rally moved
The Crosby-Ironton Sports Boosters rally dinner that was scheduled Saturday at Gary's Sports Bar has been rescheduled to Oct. 10 at TJ's on the Cove in Deerwood.
The boosters recently donated $50 to every grade 9-12 athlete in a fall sport at C-I to help bring down the cost of the athlete's fee (which is $230 per sport, per season, with no family cap). The group plans on doing the same for athletes in winter and spring sports.
Tickets are $25 each and you may purchase tickets from Karen Swanhorst, Raye Cragun, Judy Christenson (in the high school office) and Deb Anderson. You need not be a member of the boosters club to attend.
