20 years ago (1989)

Cheryl Gelbmann, an entrepreneur who helped start Impart Educational Associates, was named winner of the 1989 Athena Award. The announcement was made at the Brainerd Chamber's annual dinner at Breezy Point.

30 years ago (1979)

Brainerd Area United Way volunteers will begin the 1979 drive today with a kickoff dinner at the Brainerd Holiday Inn. Larry Hennig, professional wrestler, will be the keynote speaker. Don Bromen, chair, says this year's goal is $96,600.

40 years ago (1969)

Two Brainerd high school juniors were seen to be intoxicated when arriving at school and were sent home. Instead, they returned to the school and got into a scuffle with teachers Mel Olson and Norm Arveson. Principal Bob Gross helped subdue them and suspended them.

60 years ago (1949)

(Photo) This 430-pound black bear, accused of stealing chickens near Nimrod, 23 miles north of Staples, was killed Sunday by Alfred Tellock, Sebeka, and son Merlin Tellock, of Brainerd.

80 years ago (1929)

A four-foot granite monument stands in Garrison at the junctions of Highways 18 and 35 in tribute to the memory of William Tauer, who lost his life saving fishermen during a fierce storm on Mille Lacs, June 10, 1927. He saved several before capsizing and dying.

100 years ago (1909)

Otto Tykkynen, an employee of the Northern Pacific car shops here was struck by the tender of a switch engine in the yards and was rolled along the track for 30 feet. It was not thought he was badly injured.
