AITKIN - Lawrence "Larry" Howard, 86, Aitkin, passed away Friday, Sept. 26, 2008, at his home in Aitkin.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church in Aitkin with Pastor Sandy Berg-Holte officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be an hour before services Thursday at the church. Interment will be at the Howard Cemetery in Aitkin with a luncheon to follow at Bethesda Rossburg Church. Military rites will be provided by the Aitkin VFW and the Aitkin American Legion.
Pallbearers will be Wayne "Duff" Howard, Jim Howard, Roger Howard, Terry Howard, Steve Howard and Jeff Howard. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry's grandchildren.
He was born Dec. 21, 1921, in Aitkin to Peter and Minnie (Carlson) Howard. He attended Longfellow School for eight years. He graduated from Aitkin High School in 1939. He was a member of the U.S. Army and served from 1941-1945 as a military policeman. He married Betty Sjodin on Dec. 5, 1946, in Minneapolis. He attended the University of Minnesota. They then moved to Aitkin. He worked at the mines and later as a postman. He was also manager of the Rossburg Telephone Company and was a clerk at School District No. 9 for 15 years. He also farmed his whole life.
He was a member of the Aitkin American Legion (Lee) Post No. 86, the Mystic Lodge No. 213 of Aitkin, the Scottish Rite of Duluth and the AAD Temple of the Shrine of Duluth. He was a council member and treasurer of the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Rossburg. He also served on the Kimberly Town Board.
Larry was very proud of his family. They meant everything to him. He is loved and will be missed dearly.
Larry is survived by his wife, Betty of 61 years; his five children, Carole (Steve) Prince, Garrison, Dale (Linda) Howard, Aitkin, Janice (Steve) Bare, Aitkin, Joanne (Steve) Mott, Pequot Lakes, and Dan (Dianne) Howard, Bellechester; nine grandchildren, Todd (DeLynn) Howard, Brainerd, Heather (Kevin) Schelander, Pequot Lakes, Amy (Jeremy) Millsop, Deerwood, Matthew Bare, Mound, Michael Bare, Las Vegas, Alyssa Howard, Bellechester, Angela Mott, Pequot Lakes, Sarah Howard, Bellechester, and Rachel Mott, Pequot Lakes; seven great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Lauren Greiner, Austin, Luke and Logun Schelander, and Brady and Ethan Millsop; and six sisters-in-law, Marge Howard and Leota Howard, both of Aitkin, Millie Howard and Muriel Howard, both of Brainerd, Darlene Howard, Merrifield, and Joy Howard, California.
He was preceded in death by his parents; nine brothers, Luther, Walter, George, Woody, Fran, Bill, Richard, Leonard "Ole" and Arnold Howard; and two sisters, Florence Burlingame and Beatrice Hoffman.
Arrangements are with Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin.
