BAXTER -- Jesse Bates' goal in the second half proved to be the game winner as the Brainerd Warriors squeaked past the Detroit Lakes Lakers 1-0 Saturday in non-conference boys soccer at Southdale Field.
"I'm very pleased with our effort," Warriors coach David Devine said. "This was one of our better games of season and it came against a tough Detroit Lakes team. Our overall teamwork and communication was the best it's been all year."
Bates, who scored his eighth goal of the season, was assisted by Kevin Shelito
Brained goalie Josiah Collins stopped five Lakers shots to help record the first shutout of the season for the Warriors. This was Brainerd's fifth win in six games.
"I'm happy with our defensive effort," said Devine. "Our defense is really working well together and communicating in the back. The play of sweeper James Mix and John VanLandschoot has been tremendous. I challenged the team to go 4-0 this past week and they did that."
