DULUTH -- Sister Helen Claire (Bernice) Arts, OSB of St. Scholastica Monastery, died very peacefully at St. Scholastica Monastery on Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003. She entered the Duluth Benedictines on Aug. 30, 1939, and made her monastic profession on July 11, 1941.
Sister Helen Claire was born in Hibbing, Minn., and attended Stanbrook Hall. She earned a nursing degree from the College of St. Scholastica and a master's degree in nursing education from Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. She took a refresher course in obstetric nursing at St. Joseph Hospital in St. Paul, Minn.
Sister Helen Claire taught grade school at St. Timothy, Chicago, and was head nurse for the labor and delivery unit at St. Mary's Hospital, Duluth. She taught nursing at College of St. Scholastica and was also interim chair of the department of nursing. She served as staff member at the McCabe Renewal Center, Duluth and was medical staff coordinator at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd. After her active years, she served in various positions at St. Scholastica Monastery.
Sister Helen Claire served on various care center boards in Sisseton, S.D., Duluth, Minn., and Brainerd, Minn. She was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing and received the Lavine Award for excellence in teaching. She was instrumental in establishing a chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society at CSS.
Sister Helen Claire was preceded in death by her parents William T. and Rose Marie (Buckley) Arts, two brothers, Robert and Bernard, and a sister, Alice (Briffith). She is survived by four sisters, Sister Vivian Arts, OSB; Frances (Salmi); Helen Carlson and Rosemary (Ehrhard).
There will be a wake service today with visitation from 7-9 p.m. The Mass of Christian burial will be on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at 11 a.m. Burial is in Gethsemane Cemetery. Arrangements are by Dougherty Funeral Home. Memorials to St. Scholastica Monastery are preferred.
