The giant puffball to top them all

Posted: Tuesday, September 28, 2004

Randy Anderson, custodian at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brainerd, discovered this giant puffball on a shaded hill near the church. Anderson said he's been watching the giant puffball grow for a few weeks. Deer ate portions of the puffball but Monday it weighed nine pounds and measured 18 inches in diameter. It would have probably weighed about 10 pounds if the deer hadn't eaten it, he said. Anderson said he wasn't sure what he was going to do with the giant puffball, which is edible because it was pure white inside, but he said he was too scared to try eating it.
