BRAINERD -- The first-ever college course dedicated to studying the works of Minnesota novelist Jon Hassler will begin Jan. 9, 2001, at the campus where his writing career began.
"Authors in Focus" is a three-credit English course offered at Central Lakes College, Brainerd, and taught by Joe Plut.
Hassler and Plut were classmates at St. John's University, Collegeville, in the 1950s, then colleagues at CLC more than two decades ago. They remain close friends.
Plut is on a fall term sabbatical from duties as an English and humanities instructor at the community and technical college, where he is the senior faculty member with 34 years in the classroom. Plut's sabbatical project: Interviewing Hassler on the nine adult novels written since his days on the Brainerd college faculty.
Plut anticipates publishing the interviews, as well as using them to augment the reading and review of Hassler's works.
The class, ENGL 1480, Section 60, will meet from 5:30 to 8:20 p.m. Tuesdays on the Brainerd campus. Registration begins Nov. 15 (toll-free 1-800-933-0346, extension 8031).
The spring term for 2001 will run through May 16.
