A new brochure titled "Wildflowers of Minnesota's Northern Prairies" is now available from the DNR. It features 51 native wildflowers you might encounter while walking in wet, dry or mesic prairies. Photographs are arranged by flower color. Text describing the plant's size, habitat and blooming time accompanies each photograph.

New ATV club forming in Crosby
A organizational meeting for a new all-terrain vehicle club based in Crosby is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Oct. 18 at Hallett Memorial Library at 101 First St. N.E.
"Anyone interested in participating in a Crosby ATV club is invited to attend this important organizational meeting," said Ken Irish, club organizer. "Officials from the All-Terrain Vehicle Association of Minnesota will be on hand to answer questions about starting our own ATV club in Crosby."
The meeting was scheduled in response to inquiries over the past several months about ATV club activities in the area, Irish said. Presently there are more than 50 ATV clubs in Minnesota. Phone (651) 451-3393 for more information.
Brown wins 2003 Tournament of Champions
Local angler Brian Brown weighed five bass at 13 pounds, 7 ounces to take first place at the 2003 Excel Bass Tournament of Champions Sept. 21 on Gull Lake.
Joel Stokka was second with 12 pounds, 9 ounces and Jim Smith was third with 12 pounds, 2 ounces. Brown and Chris Kassler tied for big bass honors with a pair of 4 pound, 2 ounce lunkers.

Hike for Hope is Oct. 5
The third annual Hike for Hope is scheduled for Oct. 5 on the North Country Trail in the Paul Bunyan State Forest near Akeley. Participants are invited to remember unsettling world events and to offer silent tribute for the nation's leaders.
The hike begins at 1 p.m. at the junction of Highway 64 and Steamboat Forest Road, located 3.7 miles north of Akeley. Hikers can walk at their own pace up to five miles or the distance they choose. Hikers can be transported back to the trailhead beginning at 5 p.m. at the junction of the Akeley Cut-off Road. Seasoned hikers can choose to return to the head of the trail by foot. Eicher wins International Pike Tournament
Don Eicher won the 29th annual International Pike Tournament Sept. 20-21 on Gull Lake with a catch weighing 18 pounds, 1 ounce. Doug Kasper was second with 17 pounds, 4 ounces, Jeff Collison was third with 15 pounds, 3 ounces, Fred Treichler was fourth with 14 pounds, 13 ounces, and Len Rudolph was fifth with 14 pounds, 3 ounces.
The tournament was sponsored by Northerns Inc. and Ernie's on Gull served as weigh-in site.
Mackendanz, Hawkinson win Northern Inc. tourney on Gull
Dennis Mackendanz and Curt Hawkinson weighed 31 pounds of northern pike to win a Northern Inc. tournament on Gull Lake on Sept. 6.
Chuck and Ray Sellers were second with 25 pounds, 7 ounces, Buzz and John Guin were third with 24 pounds, 9 ounces, Jim and Steve Allen were fourth with 22 pounds, 7 ounces, and Rob and Kim Carper were fifth with 20 pounds, 2 ounces. Big fish of the day weighed 16 pounds, 4 ounces and was caught by Hawkinson. This was Northern Inc's sixth tournament of the season.
