GRAND RAPIDS -- The Central Lakes College men's and women's golf teams wrapped up conference titles and the Raiders' Melanie Wilson was the women's medalist in the final meet of the regular season Wednesday at Pokegama Golf Course.
CLC won the men's division with 302 strokes, eight fewer than runner-up Northland. The Raiders' Joe Sauer finished one shot off the pace of medalist Troy Irwin of Vermilion. Wednesday's effort followed a 303 the Raiders shot Tuesday at the Hibbing Invitational.
"Because the state and region is a two-day event, we try to play two-day events," Raiders coach Jim Russell said. "It was nice to see our top five guys shoot in the 70s. Two of our freshmen, Justin Heitkamp and Brian Bahe, shot 75s.
"We had a little more competition than the last meet. Northland shot 310. That was their best score."
Wilson shot an 83 in the women's meet to beat teammates Becky Schornack and Tricia Jasmer by five shots.
"Melanie has won every meet she played," said Russell. "Most of her scores have been in the low 80s. She's a very competitive golfer. She works hard on her game. She would like to go on somewhere else to play golf. (The state and region) will be a good opportunity for people to see her and her scores."
