Achermann remembered as CLC student

October benefit being planned

Posted: Saturday, September 26, 2009

A benefit is being planned to help cover costs of the search for Peter Achermann of rural Leader who has been missing for two months.

Achermann, 82, has been missing since July 24. He was last seen in Staples. Since that time, his family, with the help of the Cass County Sheriff's Department, the Minnesota National Guard, the DNR, the State Patrol, local emergency personnel, bloodhound dogs and hundreds of volunteers have searched every swamp, field and wooded area to find Achermann.

The massive efforts have yielded no clues as to the whereabouts of Achermann.

Cass County Sheriff Randy Fisher said Friday that the sheriff's office continues to receive new information and leads in the case that it has been following, but Achermann has not yet been found.

Central Lakes College instructors Dar and Ron Houle of Merrifield, who've been actively searching for Achermann, are helping coordinate the Oct. 24 benefit that will be held at the Bear's Den in Leader. A spaghetti buffet will be served at noon with a silent auction, raffles and games going on throughout the afternoon. The live auction will be held from 1-4 p.m.

Achermann is a Central Lakes College alumnus. Larry Lundblad, CLC president, said in an e-mail, "Mr. Achermann's many friends and acquaintances at Central Lakes College are distressed by his disappearance. A number of our students, faculty and staff have been involved in the search. As an alum, Mr. Achermann has a special place in the hearts of his instructors and fellow alumni. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time."

Fritz Bertelt, an English instructor at CLC and one of Achermann's former instructors, said in an e-mail that "Peter provided great contributions to discussions in the class. His life experiences brought immeasurable value to the course. It truly saddened me when I heard that an alumnus from our CLC family had gone missing."
