Six area racers competed in two highly contested stock car feature races at the four-day, 17th annual Wissota 100 at Cedar Lake Speedway last week in New Richmond, Wis. Racers numbering 476 were competing in five classes.
Five of the area racers alone advanced to the 20-lap Wissota Midwest Modified feature. Troy Jordan of Brainerd paced the 26 car-field (see his story in the Sept. 20 Dispatch), Monte Hall of Aitkin finished fourth after starting 11th, 19th-place starting Tim Brown finished eighth but was disqualified after a post-race inspection, John Thompson of Brainerd finished 14th after starting 24th, and Jason Garner of Brainerd who started 12th placed 24th.
Tommy Thompson of Brainerd finished 18th in the 40-lap Wissota Late Model feature after starting fourth. Twenty-four cars started the feature from the 76 entries. There were eight heat races and four B features to narrow the field.
The Midwest modified 26-car field was tightened from 78 entries. There were eight heat races and four B Features, where the top two racers from each advanced to the feature.
In the third Wissota Street Stock B feature, Shawn Wageman of Pine River paced the field but was disqualified after a post-race inspection.
Brown also paced the field in a midwest modified B feature. Other podium finishers (first through third) in B features were Thompson, who finished second and Mike Jones of Onamia and Craig Larson of Pequot Lakes, who both placed third.
See below for all the results. Only the top five finishers of the heat races, C and B features are listed because they were taken from the speedway's website. Jean Mass, a North Central Speedway employee who attended the event, also assisted with the results.
Other area racers competing but not placing among the top five in either their heat races or B features were DJ Dondelinger of Brainerd, Don Wermter of Brainerd, and Craig Larson of Pequot Lakes in midwest modified; Mark Johnson of Baxter, Charlie Beens of Emily, Dan Severson of Brainerd and Donnie Jensen of Brainerd in street stock; Dan Yaunick of Brainerd in late model and Tim O'Brien of Brainerd in super stock.

Mass, Franzen finish among top 20
Dave Mass of Brainerd and John Franzen of Baxter finished among the top 20 Wissota Championship Sprint Car racers in the 30 lap feature for the Western 100 at Brown County Speedway Sept. 14 in Aberdeen, S.D.
Mass finished 12th and Franzen finished 16th. Roger Rager of Pequot Lakes finished 22nd after being involved in an accident.
In heat races, Rager won his, Mass finished third in his and Franzen finished fifth in his. The top five finishers from each heat qualified for the feature where 24 cars raced.
Mass and four other area racers also competed in the Wissota Super Stock class -- Kurt Loftis of Brainerd, Pete Loftis of Brainerd, Erick Thiesse of Brainerd and Al Schmidt of Baxter.
In the third B Feature, Kurt Loftis, Schmidt, and Mass finished third, fourth and fifth; Thiesse finished fifth in the fourth B Feature and Pete Loftis placed sixth in the first B feature. The top two racers from each B feature advanced to the feature.
In heat races, Kurt Loftis and Mass each finished fourth, Schmidt finished sixth, Thiesse finished seventh, and Pete Loftis finished ninth.
4 racers finish among top 20
Four area racers finished among the top 20 Wissota Championship Sprint Car racers in the Red River Valley Speedway, Fargo, N.D., final points standings.
Roger Rager was seventh, Sye Anderson of Brainerd was 12th, M Mass was 16th and Gary Walton of Baxter was 19th.
