A two-vehicle accident today knocked out power to much of downtown Brainerd.
Later this morning, repair work related to the power outage resulted in loss of phone service in areas of downtown, specifically to the Law Enforcement Center although officials said 911 service was not affected.
The accident happened just before 8 a.m. in front of the Brainerd Fire Department at East River Road and Laurel Street.
In the accident, a power pole was broken and power was lost to many areas south of Laurel Street to about Oak Street, said Walt Sjolund, Brainerd Public Utilities superintendent. Power was returned to some places along Laurel Street about 9 a.m.
Sjolund said a distribution feeder for downtown was cut, and power would be out south of Laurel Street and east of East River Road until this afternoon as repairs are made.
Along with several downtown businesses, the Crow Wing County Courthouse and the North Star Apartments high rise, the Law Enforcement Center and the fire department lost power. The fire department and Law Enforcement Center operated using generators.
Firefighters extricated one person from the wrecked cars and North Ambulance transported the victim to St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd.
Information on those involved in the accident was unavailable this morning.
