Danielle Sawatzky, the daughter of David and LuAnn Sawatzky of Isle, has been selected as the student of the month for September.

Sawatzky is president of the student council, member of the national honor society, is on the yearbook staff and was runner-up for Miss Isle in 1999. She also participates ion the volleyball and cheerleading squads.

Jeff Albertson, the son of Allan and Nancy Albertson of Crosslake and a Pequot Lakes student, recently attended a world affairs seminar held at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. About 1,000 students spent a week studying and discussing world issues with 250 foreign exchange students. The purpose of this seminar was to provide a forum for future international leaders to be introduced to some of the most perplexing global problems and hopefully to contribute to future world peace.

Some of the notable speakers were Jean-Michel Costeau of France; Ralph Nader, consumer activist; Kakuna Kerina, director of the African program for the international league for human rights; and Selim Beslagic, mayor of Tuzla, Bosnia, and recipient of the 1997 Nobel Prize for Peace nomination by the Internation Peace Bureau in Geneva.
