20 years ago (1989)

Sometimes good things come in big packages. Don Thomas, Brainerd, had a big surprise at the Muskie Inc. international catch and release tournament at Cass Lake. He brought in a 54-inch muskie that is the largest caught in the 22-year history of the tournament.

30 years ago (1979)

Leo Marchel, Sr., enjoying one of his finest seasons on the golf course, broke out of a tie at 76 with Clyde Anderson on the final nine holes to win the 2nd Annual Fall Classic at Brainerd Country Club with a 112. High schooler Steve Stoxen was fifth at 119.

40 years ago (1969)

60 years ago (1949)

Police arrested a Deerwood man for drunken driving after his grain truck plowed into a garden at the Paul Austin place on Nineteenth Street, hit the Jordan residence, also on Nineteenth, then weaved east on Highway 18 at 20 miles per hour.

80 years ago (1929)

Miss Eleanor Nolan of Brainerd, 23-year-old student at the University of Minnesota, was found overcome with illuminating gas at the home of her sister. Her father, J.J. Nolan, went to General Hospital in Minneapolis, where she has a chance for recovery.

100 years ago (1909)

Some would-be practical joker hung a diphtheria sign on the door of the Washington school building last night and some of the pupils returned home this morning, supposing there would be no school. There has been a good bit of deviltry going on at the school.
