20 years ago (1989)

The newest member of the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department has a nose for crime. He also has pointed ears and likes to ride with his head hanging out the back window of a squad car. His name is Joker and he's a German shepherd.

30 years ago (1979)

(Photo) Oscar Dominguez Reyes, of Tampico, Mexico, shows the location of his home to his new high school counselor, Arnold "Casey" Stengel. Dominguez, who will study law when he returns to Mexico, is an exchange student through Youth for Understanding.

40 years ago (1969)

(Photo) Otto Neuenfeldt, Brainerd, tried nightcrawlers at Stoney Brook and came away with these two brown trout weighing 3-8 and 2-14.

60 years ago (1949)

You gotta live in St. Louis, Missouri, or Nisswa to belong to the Jack Pine Coffee Club. And you gotta be a fisherman and an advocate of fish propagation, too. If you have all these you can join the club at Martin's Coffee Shop in Nisswa every day at 8:30 a.m.

80 years ago (1929)

"They shall not pass," said the French to the German hordes at Verdun. That same spirit was manifested at Staples yesterday where the Blue and White of Brainerd withheld the heavy-weighted shock troops of Staples, garnering a scoreless tie.

100 years ago (1909)

Iver Holden has opened his Central Hotel to the public. His new building is attractive and the rooms are light and airy. His many friends are happy to see him rise from the ashes of his old, burned out building, so to speak.
