Area briefs Cass Lake-Bena school gets reading grant
Cass Lake-Bena Elementary School in Cass Lake will receive a $1,038,444 No Child Left Behind grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Sen. Norm Coleman recently announced.
The grant will go to the school's Early Reading First Program. The program works to ensure that all children enter kindergarten with the necessary language, cognitive and early reading skills for continued success in school.
The Early Reading First Program is a nationwide effort designed to provide high quality early education to young children, especially those from low-income families.
Leech Lake Tribal College to receive funds
CASS LAKE -- The Leech Lake Tribal College in Cass Lake will receive a $99,410 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to provide resources for planning and site development to establish a new campus, Sen. Norm Coleman announced.
Fifth-graders invited to participate in Arbor Day National Poster Contest
The Minnesota Nursery & Landscape Association and the National Arbor Day Foundation are joining forces to promote the importance of planting and caring for trees.
All fifth-grade students in Minnesota are invited to showcase their artistic talents by creating posters reflecting the theme, "Trees are terrific.and Energy Wise!"
Teachers and homeschoolers in Minnesota can sign up by contacting Jill Engelmann, the state's contest coordinator and the education director for the Minnesota Nursery & Landscape Association. Requests can be mailed to Engelmann at P.O. Box 130307, St. Paul, MN 55113, or by sending an e-mail to jill@mnla.biz. Teachers also will receive free activity guides with in-depth lesson plans, hands-on activities and contest information.
All fifth-grade students in Minnesota are eligible to participate in the statewide poster competition, with the winner advancing to the national level. The deadline for state submission is Feb. 25, 2005. The Minnesota state winner will receive four unlimited ride wristbands to Camp Snoopy and two Valleyfair funtificates for free admission. In addition, MNLA will conduct an official tree-planting ceremony at the school of the state winner during Arbor Day week.
The national winner, two parents and the teacher of the winning student will receive an expense-paid trip to Nebraska for the National Awards Weekend April 29-May 1. The national winner also will receive a $1,000 savings bond and lifetime membership in The National Arbor Day Foundation. The winning teacher will receive $200 for classroom materials.
