SEPTEMBER 21 - 60 years ago (1949) - Indications that an inadequate system of accounting was employed by the Brainerd School District were revealed today following an audit by the state public examiner. The superintendent and board are already taking steps to rectify the problems.

Focus on transparency
This spring, President Obama reversed himself and decided to block the release of photographs showing the abuse of detainees by the U.S. military. Now, having lost in two lower federal courts, the administration is seeking review by the U.S. Supreme Court. The justices should decline the invitation.
On Aug. 13, 2009, Exxon Mobil, an evil capitalist company, pleaded guilty in federal court to killing 85 birds which had come into contact with crude oil or other pollutants. Their fine, $600,000.
OTHER OPINION: DETENTION
The Obama administration deserves credit for proposing changes to the detainee review process at Bagram Air Base. In theory, the changes should increase the likelihood that only those who should be held will be imprisoned there.
