College to host Education Fair Sept. 28
Ninety colleges, universities, and technical schools throughout Minnesota and neighboring states will have representatives in the gymnasium to discuss admissions, tuition, financial aid and programs of study with students and their parents.

Kendal Rae Dehler, Isle, was awarded the $2,000 presidential scholarship for 2004-05 at Central Lakes College in Brainerd, where she is a student working toward her associate in arts degree.

Damian James Uselman, 24, Baxter, was sentenced in Crow Wing District Court for theft to 87 days jail, placed on 10 years supervised probation and fined $50.

REMER -- A 39-year-old Minneapolis man, Paul A. Ladwig, died Saturday when the all-terrain vehicle he was operating crashed into a dirt embankment along South Thunder Lake Road south of Remer, the Cass County Sheriff's Office reported.

PINE RIVER -- Claude Hemsworth, age 80, of Pine River, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at his home. He was born March 3, 1924, in Minneapolis to Claude and Clara (Palmer) Hemsworth. Claude was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a member of the American Legion Post No. 613 in Pine River, the Pine River Lions Club and the Masonic Lodge in International Falls. He worked at 3M in St. Paul until his retirement.

Over 1000 lives have been wrongly lost, not necessarily because it is a war we shouldn't have fought (though I would argue that) but rather because it was a war that was fought in a way destined to fail from the beginning.

Driving into my hometown of Brainerd/Baxter from the west, on 210, I was appalled at the lack of basic maintenance regarding weed control on the thoroughfares. At the city limits, we are greeted by noxious weeds, waist high. If visitors and citizens can see this mess, surely the people in charge of keeping our area clean can see it. The mess sends a clear message of a lack of pride in this community.
